Welcome to the eight clobal Helsinki Chemicals Forum
The Helsinki Chemicals Forum has successfully established its place as the leading forum for promoting chemical safety and analysing different problem areas. There is clearly a need for an event like this. The international chemical industry and chemical trade is constantly growing and the field is getting more complex and versatile. This development also brings about stricter legislation and different regulations with global applicability.
The rapidly growing free trade calls for the faster unification of different rules and regulations on a global scale. This on the other hand can be a challenge for countries that are already struggling in the current economic situation. However, it is in no one’s interest that the rules and regulations of chemical safety and safety in facilities and plants should be ignored or mitigated. Exchanging information and finding useful practices together are the key elements of the solution.
This two-day forum gathers a significant group of leading international authorities, organisations, companies, consultants, researchers and media representatives to Helsinki to discuss the most central problems and challenges. The event also offers an actual means to make a difference in chemical safety: all significant new ideas and conclusions arising from the themes covered in the forum are compiled into a Conference Report which is distributed to decision makers around the world. Throughout the years we have tackled a considerable variety of critical themes, from endocrine disrupters to the strategies of the 2020s.
An acknowledged international committee is nowadays responsible for the programme. The committee consists of representatives from the European Commission, ECHA, the Canadian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, OECD, NICNAS from Australia, CEFIC, ACC from the USA, VCI from Germany, CIEL from Switzerland, and Chemical Watch, our media partner. This established committee chooses the most prominent themes for our panels from a host of suggestions sent from around the world.
The operations of the Helsinki Chemicals Forum are led by the esteemed Advisory Board. This year especially I would like to welcome its new members from the OECD, UNEP, the European Commission, CEFIC and TUKES, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency.
I would also like to thank our supporters: the City of Helsinki, the Finnish Fair Foundation, the Finnish Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and naturally all our partners.
I am proud to welcome you to the eighth Helsinki Chemicals Forum.
Let us make a better future for our children!
Secretary General, Helsinki Chemicals Forum
